High End Audio Frequently asked questions
Voting Question: 2.1 speakers for television?
Hi! I have a great LCD TV as far as picture quality is concerned. Sound however sucks. And my room architecture does not allow 5.1. only 2.1 speakers. Now I started searching online and I found High End Output speakers ( like polk audio etc) . They meet my requirements but are waaaaaay beyond my budget. This because they also need an amlplifier which costs more than the speakers themselves. Could someone suggest cheap & good 2.1 speakers for my tv? Distance between the tv and the person watching is approx 10 feet.

Resolved Question: American Idol Audition Song Help....?
Hi, I can't audition for American Idol THIS year, but I was wondering if I would have been anywhere close good enough for Idol this year. I'll post a few youtube/other audio links. Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq-f60EHrmI - "Scars" by Allison Iraheta (a little reverb. Sorry about the higher notes- my microphone doesn't take sound very well. :P) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veP44vE6b2A - "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus (I know it's pitchy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlB37WTSdM4 - "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall (singing competition. I won third place! BTW- this is my aunt's youtube- if you have any comments, post here!) http://twaud.io/6sY - "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts (I sing more than this genre, by the way. I'm just trying to find unedited stuff. This has a little reverb, that's every. Sorry about my phone at the end. :P) Pleaseeee criticize! --Vada I'm going to be 16 very soon, sooo I'll be 17-18ish when I audition. Sorry, I left out another question! Any tune suggestions? Please share! @Vision LOL Sorry. I did NOT try to look great for that video. I simply sat down and played. That vid was also a few months ago and, yes, I have slimmed down a little since then. Sorry :P and thanks :) @Vision I understand. Thank you for giving me criticism and being so honest! I am very appreciative.

Resolved Question: How to create an audio file?
I feel a bit silly, but I can't figure out how to create/record an audio file. I'm sure it probably doesn't matter what I'm recording, but what I'm trying to do is record from a fetal doppler (where you can hear the baby's heartbeat) to the computer. I was intending just to create a file on my computer so I can keep it, email it to my mom, whatever. I have a cable with headphone jacks on each end that connects to the doppler, and I found the mic input on the computer... but just connecting it doesn't prompt me to do anything the same way as if I attach something with a USB, and it doesn't recognize the doppler as being connected. While I'm not surprised by this since it's not a high-tech piece of equipment, I just don't know what nice of software I'm looking for to do this. Any help? Thank you!! I do have Windows, BTW.

Resolved Question: can i use non bose wiring with bose speakers?
my home is wired from an A/V room (where every teh audio quip is) to the various corners of my living room, where there are speaker connection outlets. i have an old bose system - if i keep the bose 'subwoof" in the a/v room, can i then run a standard speaker wire from teh subwoof to each of the 5 speaker connectors in the a/v room, and then connect the actual bose speakers to the speaker connectors at the five points in teh living room. basically, between the subwoof and the speakers, there would be a segment where it is connected via whatever high end wiring is "in the wall"...would that work?

Resolved Question: why does my car audio cut out?
i recently bought a kenwood 945 deck and when i raised the volume to "noisy" the audio would cease and arrive back on randomly anywhere from 1 second to a few seconds... before that i bought the kwood 545, but returned due to wanting more features, and didnt notice that problem ( i didnt have any rear speakers hooked up at the time tho) ... im using an older alpine 4 channel mrv-f430 that worked fine with my older broken pioneer deck and infinity kappa perfect speakers. alongside the new kwood 945 deck i also installed new kicker QS component speakers and added kicker RS rear speakers( never had rear speakers before). trying to figure out if the amp cant handle the "high end" QS kicker speakers and the added rear speakers or if its the 945 ( remember the 545 deck didnt have a problem without the rear speakers) thanks for any insight! p.s. i checked cd and ipod same problem. im wondering if anyone thinks my amp is overheating? which is causing the audio pauses (deck still displays track playng)

Voting Question: Laptop CHKDISK Checking Drive Consistency?
I started up my laptop today and it started a check on my drives. After research I found this can make files corrupt but anywho - I started up the account, and my screen was black, it eventually came round after lots of weird audio and flashing on and off desktop. I did a disk cleanup fine on both my C steer and Data D steer. But when I came to defrag it said I had a custom program doing it for me? Which I don't, so I cancelled the custom to do as normal. But when I click analyse or defrag it does a few seconds and stops! I'm at my total wits end. I managed to do a dxdiag for you guys, and I'm on my back-up pc atm - so this is hand typed! Open Question: Need advice for buying a new laptop?
Hey guys, I am seeking advice for buying a new laptop. I am a Law student and I need help choosing which laptop should I buy. I am gonna be doing a lot of research and so I need a quite quick one, slow laptops depress me! After some research, I ended up with the impression that Toshiba and Lenovo are the best (what do you think?). I currently have Dell and I am not satisfied at every, I also know so many people personally who aren't satisfied with their Dells and so I am not planning to buy a Dell what so ever. I want an extremely reliable laptop. My main concerns are: 1. Powerful processor 2. Battery life 3. High sound (Enhanced Audio) Concerning the price, I know that a cheap price would give a cheap laptop that would end up getting messed by the end of the year so I am willing to pay a decent price for a decent laptop (but also not so very expensive). What do advise me? Thanks in advance (:

Open Question: What type of speaker cables are these?
I have 2 speakers that hook up to my stereo via pulling back a couple switches, sticking the ends of wires from the speakers in, and letting go of the switches--in turn holding the wires in place. It is an RCA High Performance 5 Disc Audio System. First, what is the name for the type of wires these are? Second, what is the name for the switches by which they are held into the stereo? Lastly, is there a means of converting Digital audio to run through my stereo and through the speakers? Good input on the first 2 answers--to be more specific, my television has a digital output and no RCA output. The stereo has what appears to be RCA holes, undefined as input or output--but are red and white. The stereo also has the 4 clips for the 4 stereo wires, but furthermore, it has 4 more clips for what it calls "AM antenna" and "FM antenna".

Open Question: How is Balanced XLR better than optical toslink?
I don't really understand the balanced XLR connection for hi fi and hi end audio systems. Isn't the optical toslink a much better connection? It apparently is not because on high end systems, every you will look is a balanced XLR connection. So, in what ways does a balanced XLR connection give you better sound and signal transfer than an optical toslink connection?

Resolved Question: Youtube videos - Camcorder?
Price: 250-500, I don't have to pay taxes, so I can keep a bit there if it's a little over the 500 mark. I got a little breathing room. Quality: No idea what I need it for business as in Youtube videos that give great quality, but not amazing quality as in professional at this point. My business can't afford to go over budget there, so nothing over like 800 please. I know a bit about TV, so terms like P and I are semi understandable for the most part. I need a 720P for the most part and I think that's the highest Youtube can hold currently. Brand: Must be a flip video at this time unless you got something that's like it in design. I need something I can hold on me at every times. It must take pictures and video and flip video seems like the only thing that will run 720p and fit in my pocket since it's thing and tiny like an ipod. Edit - I probably should of included this, but didn't think of it at the time. I intend on using it for sports as in moving and having a camera guy as long as a stationary mount, so I can talk into it. I bet the straight talk will be fine, but the movement of it might be a little off? I just wonder about it. What I have currently (what I'm looking at): Flip Video MinoHD™ 8GB 120-Min. Pure Digital Camcorder MODEL: PUDM2120M * 2" anti-glare TFT display * 960 x 240 pixels screen resolution * Records in HD 720p (1280 x 720, 16:9) * Records 30 frames per sec. * H.264 video compression / AAC audio compression / saves as MP4 file * Smooth, multi-step 2X digital zoom * 1-touch recording * Powers up in 3 seconds * 8 touch-sensitive capacitive buttons * HDMI™ output (mini-HDMI connector; standard HDMI cable not included) * Backlit buttons * Child safe mode prevents accidental deletion of clips * Silent mode * Tripod mount FINAL END PRICE: $159 - Good deal?

Voting Question: what is making my recordings lack in high end frequencies?
i'm recording songs at home using a basic m-audio interface, studio projects B1 mic, and logic 5.5 (pc). comparing my mixes to "real" songs makes them sound muddy. A spectrum analysis shows that i dont receive much of a response past 6kHz. Im wondering where it goes wrong: mic, interface(i dont think it is as Im listening to songs through it and the high end is grand), or some settings in Logic? thanks in advance

Resolved Question: How to get full HD on the Xbox 360?
From the UK! :) Hello there... okay I have a 1080p 24" LOGIK LCD HD TV (I thought more details would be better) and I possess a HDMI cable that's just a usual black one with gold plates for any system. I also have the official HDMI cable and Audio Adapter especially made for the Xbox 360. I also have the cable with the coloured wires (red, white and yellow and the other red, blue green) with the huge bulky part that plugs into the back of the Xbox and doesn't let you plug in a HDMI cable cos it's too fat.. I tried splitting the bulky pluggy thing apart but it didn't work. So yeah, those are the cables I have. And I possess an Xbox 360 Premium console. But like, well first I have absolutely NO idea how to connect the Audio Adapter to my TV because... it's got the thin part and then the short little cable wire and then the end bit with the red and white slots with a black bit next to them... and I have no idea how to connect it from there. For the HDMI cable (the green official one), I connect it as instructed, put my settings to 1080p on the Xbox 360 console, display settings and yet still it's not at full HD. You know on NON high def, around objects on games (when you're watching the screen), you receive those lines that sort've move in one direction, sometimes zig zagged I guess, it's difficult to explain. Some of you may/may not receive what I mean and full HD is supposed to eliminate that, like completely and make it go away but it won't on mine? Can you guys give me like suggestions, ideas on what to do to receive the FULL HD experience on my games and movies, to make it picture perfect? I have every the cables, I have a 1080p HD ready TV that's 24" so please help me out here. Thank you in advance! :) x

Resolved Question: What computer should I buy?
I am looking for a relatively good value, high end computer to cope with every my needs. I do a lot of graphic/video/audio editing, so it will need to be speedy whilst using Photoshop, After Effects etc. I also play a lot of new games, so it needs a decent graphics card, and I do a lot of multitasking, so it would need to be able to handle that. Oh and it needs to look pretty chilly ;) Thanks for your help

Resolved Question: audio/speaker wire modification?
i have two speakers that are open wire at the end, and two others that have an odd form of plug, almost an 8th inch but not. i was wondering if i would be able to either shear off the plugs from one set, or put on two plugs on the other to have universal sets. ( i understand electrical theory, i guess i'm basically asking if the plugs being used are simply conductors or if they have a higher function)

Resolved Question: Which website offers the highest quality video viewing for uploads of short AVI clips to share...?
...with friends and family? My new point-and-shoot Canon camera also records movies that are of decent quality on my PC screen. But no matter what format I keep them in, they end up very grainy after uploading to Google Video, that is, details are only visible if you shrink the Google viewing window down to <1.5". FYI, I have used VirtualDub to edit and am not sure which format to keep in (I don't understand how an AVI file with a single edit can sometimes end up 10x bigger than the source file) and which freeware is best for editing audio. While Windows Moviemaker allows audio editing, it constantly crashes so I've given up. Also FYI, I am not interested in buying professional movie editing software for the few occasions per year that I will actually record videos.

Resolved Question: No Audio Device problem?
Hi there, I'm having a bit of trouble with my desktop computer; for some reason the sound won't work. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the speakers or anything, since I've tried several different ones. Anyway, here's everything that I know which may help you figure out the problem. 1) below Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices, it gives me a "No Audio Device" mistake at the top, and everything else is pretty much greyed out. 2) below Device Manager, there is an Other Devices category with a yellow question mark icon next to it, and this category has two entries, "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and "SM Bus Controller", both of which have an icon with a tiny exclamation mark superimposed over a yellow question mark. below their Properties, it says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." When I try to do so, it does not work. 3) When I originally bought this computer, the sound worked, so I assume that it has a sound card. However, I don't know if it's built into the motherboard or separate, since I don't really know what it would look like in the latter case. I've had people tell me to check the sound card below Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, but I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to demonstrate up as; every that's listed below that category is "Audio Codecs", "Legacy Audio Drivers", "Legacy Video Capture Devices", "Media Control Devices" and "Video Codecs" 4) I had a look inside my computer to look if there were any unplugged cables that seem like they should be plugged in; there is one cable that seems like a possible culprit but I'm not sure. It is an amalgamation of 7 thin coloured cables (black, grey, white, pink, yellow, green, and blue) which separate at the end; each of the 7 cables is tipped with a fairly long and thin black rectangular connector, each of which are labelled, with labels such as "speaker out L", "mic in" and "return L". I'm not exactly sure what this cable is for, but judging from the labels it could have to do with sound. The other end of it attaches to the bottom of the front of the computer. I do not know where the other end is supposed to attach; I found one place on the motherboard with 7 metal prongs that seemed a likely possibility, but when I tried attaching it there, my monitor gave me a "No VGA input" mistake when I tried to boot up my computer, so for now I've left them unattached. 5) I'm running Windows XP on a custom-built pc with an ASUS motherboard; I'm afraid I don't know much more about its specs that than. Anyway, hopefully that'll give you guys something to go on. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Resolved Question: Has anyone else had the misfortune to have to deal with ArcSoft?
ArcSoft are a software home in the USA. They produce media software for Audio/Video grabbers and DVB-T tuners for computers. Typical titles are: ShowBizDVD2 TotalMedia 3.5 Video Downloader I have installed every of these that were provided on a disc with a grabber and also a DVD-T tuner. I had an occasion where I needed to contact their support. What an absolute waste of time. They sent me patches that have messed up my operating system and now seem to take between 5 to 6 days to answer questions. When they do arrive back, they don't actually answer anything, so you end up asking again and again. I want to receive away from them if I can, after I have fixed my computer. Does anyone know of a company that can supply similar software but a far higher quality of support? I would prefer a UK based company so that I could fall back on the phone if I need to. Thanks for the contributions guys. Can you tell me if the software that you have recommended works with the hardware? The DVB-T tuner is a plug in USB thing that i bought from Aldi. The video/audio grabber is called a GrabMe and was bought from Netto. I would have thought that these things are pretty standard between each other and should work with alternative software other than the OEm stuf that is supplied in the box. Your help is very much appreciated.

Resolved Question: What do you think of Mel Gibson's wife defending him about these tapes?
Robyn Gibson, Mel's wife of 28 years defended her soon-to-be ex husband as a loving and wonderful dad to their 7 kids. She gave the deposition in court because she found the accusations that he was physically abusive to be absurd. This lady was dumped by Mel for his pregnant girlfriend and Robyn is still willing to defend the man in a court of law. Arlo West, CEO of Creative Forensic Services and one of the nation's leading certified forensic audio and video experts believes the Gibson tapes are altered. West, who has listened to every of the tapes says there are gaps and fading which are "red flags" that the recordings have been altered and therefore "cannot be considered accurate or usable in court." He's convinced Oksana had professional help to edit the tapes together. Her side of the conversations sounded too calm and scripted and the sound quality is too clear on her end as opposed to his. This means high tech recording equipment was used and this wasn't just a phone conversation being recorded like in the Alec Baldwin calls to his daughter . I'm no way going to defend Mel's rants and insults but it seems his underlying theme is he's telling his girlfriend she's gone through most of his money and he walked away from a wife and 7 kids for her. He created his possess problems but this lady sounds like a gold digger who's setting him up with these tapes knowing he'd react the way he did. For a lady like Robyn Gibson to defend her husband after every the pain he caused her, it must mean something. There were no scandals about Mel and other women in almost 30 years of marriage before this Russian model came along. Setting aside the fact that he insults Jews and Blacks and just judging this situation alone, would you be willing to consider that this lady isn't the innocent victim she claims to be? Mel's an alcoholic and totally messed up but could his girlfriend have known this the day she met him and used that to her ultimate advantage?

My mum thinks its a good idea to go to the LA film school or SAE institute (audio engineering.) According to every the negative things i've been hearing about film school and the SAE institute. I DEFINITELY DONT WANT TO END OF UNEMPLOYED. So if fiisn'tchool isnt the answer, how do i receive a into in the entertainment industry? (as an editor or an audio engineer) I heard its a really competitive field and some people have said to just forget about it because there are NO high paying jobs at every and the the majority of people that go to film school or somewhere like SAE just end up unemployed. Should i go with the musicBusiness bussiness because i adore it or should i stick with science subjects because i'm good at them (for a levels)?????

Resolved Question: My sub woofer sounds awful at low volume levels?
Hi, I'm using every my dad's old high-end audio equipment from the 1970s. Its a Spectal model DMC- 5 Preamp and the subwoofer is a kipsch SW8 II Black Vinyl. At every normal volume levels it is just farts and gargles with very little clean base. if i blast the music then it sounds fine. in its stead I'm using a crappy sharper image sub woofer model# SA251, and it sounds fine at every volume levels. So why does my nice sub woofer not work at average volume levels while my cheap one does?

Resolved Question: my deaf mum keeps drifting back to the volume level at which she can comfortably hear?
which of course is intolerably high for anyone of normal hearing. I notice from the papers that these problems aren't cofined only to the Nan=gran( nanovolume types but also affect other hearing affected people who make life intolerable for people around them. She refuses to talk about it and even though I don't live with her and only visit i am coming to the end of my tether now. Staff in the audio clinic tell me that hearing aids are generally immediately consigned to the drawer - the elderly are in denial of their hearing problems - 'I'm a lilttle bit deaf, dear!'. 'I am giving very serious thought' - to joining the Foreign Legion. I won't wear glasses even though i am half blind so i do understand the problem. But what really annoys me is her refusal to negotiate anything. Why for example does she keep the volume down fully every the time now even when i'm out of the home?
