High End Audio Frequently asked questions

Open Question: can i use my iphone 3G with this stereo?

i just bought a 2001 F150, adore IT. it came with a SICK stereo, a Kenwood Excelon, which i guess is supposed to be kenwoods high end, (keep in mind im coming from a jensen single din radio from target for 60 bucks) though i cant figure some stuff out with it. im reading the instruction manual, and i cant understand how to turn off the internal amp, which is reccomended since the truck has 2 amps and a sub, i guess one amp controlling the tweeters and the other controlling the sub. most i could figure out is how to turn off demo mode and turn on the subwoofer. also, the unit seems to have arrive with an iPod interface cable, which hooks up to my iPhone 3G; however; when i plug it in, the phone says that the device was not specifically made for iPhone, yada yada, and i turned on the AUX setting, and im getting no audio. is this stereo not compatible with iPhone? by the way the stereo is an excelon dpx 701. thanks guys! the instruction manual i downloaded read like typical stereo instructions and wasnt comprehendable.

Voting Question: Does the B&K Reference 70 have and HD audio format onboard processing update out yet?

My dad has had a reference 70 for about a year now, and there is no onboard processing of hd audio formats like true hd and dts-hd master audio and so forth, it is only achieved through external inputs on the b&k, while the processing is actually done on the equipment before reaching the reference 70. I just purchased myself a denon 1910 that does every of this, but of course it is much lower end. Does anybody know of a date this upgrade may be available for the reference 70? Or a high end processor that I could replace it with? Also have the 200.7 power amp by b&k. THANK YOU. My dad has a bluray player that was over 500 for it, i believe it is a pioneer, and then there is also a denon sacd player that was expensive also, but my point is that it was thousands spent on the b&k and it does not do onboard hd audio processing through hdmi like the 500 dollar denon i just bought that is in shipment at the moment. i just am searching online to look if i should have my dad sell the amp and receive a high end amp that does have hd audio decoding. Thank you for your advice, i have read this on sites as well.

Voting Question: My PC is acting very strange (I realize that's vague; click for details). Anyone?

HP G70t-200 CTO Notebook computer running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. It every started a couple days ago. I doubt it's relevant, but at the time, a pal and I were messing around with Windows Remote Assistance. More specifically, I wanted to find out if I could use it to stream her a TV demonstrate I was watching on my PC. (In case you were wondering, the video quality was awful and there was no audio on her end.) Since then, nothing has been working quite right. I first noticed it with Windows Live Mail. When I tried to start the program, I got an mistake saying my calendar contained corrupt data. I restarted my machine, hoping that would take care of the issue, but now when I try to open it, I receive the following: " Windows Live Mail could not be started. It may not be installed correctly. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are not out of memory. (0x80041161)" My disk isn't full, and I'm not out of memory. I'm positive. After closing the mistake message, two instances of "wlmail.exe *32" remain in the Processes tab of the task manager. Unless I end them both, trying to open WLMail again does nothing. I can still receive to my mail and calendar by running the program as an administrator, so it's not the end of the world; however, I use it pretty frequently, and the "Allow the following program to make changes..." window is a major pain. When opening Opera, this message pops up: "There was a problem initializing Opera Mail. The following file appears to be in use by another application: C:\Users\Taylor\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\mail\omailbase.dat To retry, please close the application that uses that file or restart your system." I don't use Opera Mail, but again, seeing that message over and over is annoying. I disabled every startup items using msconfig, thinking maybe some program was causing interference. After restarting my computer again, though, the same errors were occurring. I restored the startup items I'd disabled, and restarted yet again. When opening Firefox: "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your difficult disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you leave the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might look incorrect behaviour when accessing security features." Big red flag there. I sometimes have to use Firefox for banking; "security features" is less than specific, and I sure don't like the sound of it. And again with the disk being full. I have roughly 114 gigs of free space. I don't think that's the issue. In Windows Media Player, it says: "There are no items in your Music library. Click Organize, and then click Manage libraries to include folders in your library." I thought that was very odd. I did what it said, and the My Music folder is still listed. I thought I somehow lost my music, but I checked, and it's every in there. I can play it, but it doesn't demonstrate up in WMP's library. Finally, when I double-click an image to view it, Windows Photo Viewer pops up as always, but instead of displaying the image I want to view, it reads: "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location." The hell I don't, I thought. I'm the owner and only user of this PC. I have the highest administrative privileges possible. I'm sure there are more problems than those listed over, but I haven't tried running every single program I have installed. My first thought was some nice of malware. I did a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials, and it came up clean. I then tried fixing registry errors using CCleaner. No luck. I used System Restore to roll my machine back as far as possible (to about a week ago, before this every started), but that didn't work either. I've looked high and low for solutions, but so far I've arrive up with nothing. I searched on Microsoft's website for the mistake code WLMail was giving me, and there were no results. I figured I'd shoot Microsoft tech support an e-mail, they'd tell me what was up, and everything would be fine. I then discovered that they charge something like fifty bucks for assistance, so that's out. Frankly, I'm stumped. I'm certainly not clueless when it comes to technology, but I just can't figure this one out. (Sidebar: I just noticed that I can no longer scroll using my track pad.) Seeing how widespread the errors are, I'm pretty concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, if anybody tells me to download some "Finally quick Registry Fix" bullshit, I'll kill their family. Don't bother. I got it. I forgot I had backup system images saved on my external difficult steer. I restored one from about a week ago, and voilà.

Resolved Question: Can high end digital cameras now match dslr in image quality?

High end digital cameras keep getting larger sensors. Can these high end point & shoot cameras produce entry level dslr images? For example, can the Canon SX1IS match the Pentax K-X? I am only comparing the image quality, not zoom, video, ad audio features.

Resolved Question: Video editing software for Samsung HMX-H106?

I have a Samsung HMX-H106 HD camcorder, which shoots video in .mp4. The quality is really great when I play the video on TV or PC. But I cannot edit the video in for example Adobe Premiere or Pinnacle 14. First one doesn't even support the file (only shows the audio) and the latter plays back the video 'in slow motion'. What can I do? I tried converting the video to other video files but this damaged the quality of the video... I have a brand-new high-end computer, so that would not be the problem.

Voting Question: Which head unit for my truck? Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer?

Ok, so I have a 2004 Dodge Ram. It has the Infinity sound system, no amp, no subs, nothing special, and the stock stereo. Looking to upgrade the head unit. I've been looking at mostly Alpines, Kenwoods, Pioneers, and then Sony, JVC, and Dual. Obviously, my first three listed are the high end, second three being the low end. I just want a sharp looking head unit that will simply, work. I can spend anywhere from 200-350. Only things I really want is for it to be ipod-ready. I don't know too much about car audio, so do certain units make music sound better? Play louder? If so, tell me which one is the best for my price. Also, if anyone could request me a quality touchscreen unit for a max price of 400? (Trying to find the cheapest good one.) Might seem useless to have, but the touchscreen ones are sooo sharp. And I'm not running an amp or sub YET, but I just got the truck so I probably will in the future. Someone just help me out. Thanks

Voting Question: Best way to get audio from digital keyboard into my PC?

I have a digital piano and I want to receive that music into my PC (audigy application). It has left/right outputs (big white or red connectors like a DVD player) and headphones out (1/8" jack). It also has MIDI outputs. My PC has a standard mic input and line input and USB inputs. What is the cleanest and best way (easiest) to receive the played sound into my PC. I also have a mic I could use. Also, since I will want to bring this audio into Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 eventually to sync up with video- is Audigy good for this or do you recommend any other audio capture software. It's a new higher end PC - onboard HD audio. Thanks!

Resolved Question: What is a cheap sound card for Cubase 5?

I am by no means an audio professional, and I don't intend to be. I don't need (and can't afford) anything high-end, I just need something that would be compatible with Cubase 5, including the built-in synth and line-in type stuff in case I ever receive something that can. The cheaper the better.

Resolved Question: BT Broadband Fair Usage Policy Exceeded?

I got an email today from BT saying that the Fair Usage Policy of 100Gbs has been exceeded this month and restrictions will be put in place to cap speeds at peek times to 1Mbps till the end of February. The broadband is not in my name, (I'm 16 and live with my parents), however I know the most in the family about computers and want to find out how we managed to exceed 100Gbs which has never happened before. We have an "unlimited" broadband package. I play a fair amount of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 170 hours since the game was released, about 50 hours this month. I wanted to know if it was me causing the limit to be exceeded? I have always thought that playing online games didn't actually download that much because it was just connecting to the server. There have been 4 devices to the Home Hub, my PC - my laptop - my mum's laptop and my dad's laptop. We have been backing up files on my mum's laptop online but that can't have exceeded 10Gbs. There is a fair amount of audio streaming (spotify and podcasts on 3 of the units), a high a mount of HQ video streaming (Youtube, BBC iPlayer on 3 of the units) and high amounts of just general use of the internet (Windows Live Messenger, browsing the internet, twitter, my dad works online using email over a VPN), and my dad downloads podcasts through iTunes (About 50 this month). I'm not interested in getting bandwidth monitors or anything like that, just to figure out what is causing the limit to be exceeded, I'm guessing its not one thing, but what is the main contributing factors. Thanks very much Also very recently I have started to upload videos to youtube. Maybe about 2Gbs worth in total. And by the way I play MW2 on the PC Yeah, I know streaming is downloading. thanks very much

Voting Question: eMachines t5088 not compatible with Windows 7?

I was trying to upgrade my OS from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Ultimate. I verified on Microsoft site that this a valid upgrade and I ran compatibility adviser from Microsoft. Compatibility check showed no issues and I uninstalled whatever programs it told me were uncompatible. Since I had Windows Vista I tried an upgrade. Everything seemed to go smoothly and then my pc reboot and it asked me to setup a user name and password. It also allowed me to setup my timezone. Then it told me that it did not recognize my HDD I told it to retry. It did this 3 times and then reboot. Upon rebooting the eMachines recovery program came on and I ended up having to reinstall factory settings to Vista. I then downloaded a gazillion updates and finally was up to SP2. I decided that a clean install (custom) would do the trick. I ended up running a clean install and running the Easy Transfer program. Ended up in the same boat! I tried Live Chat on eMachines site and they freakin told me that this system is "not compatible" with Windows 7?!! WTF?! LOL....I refuse to believe that. It is...afterall...just a PC. Is this possible? Has anyone updated this particular model to Windows 7? Anywhoo....here are my specs directly from eMachines site. wish the Yahoo! community is of much more use to me than the eMachine outsourced tech support. Resolved Question: What to do about Blu-Ray dialogue being very quiet vs. effects/music?

I am a frustrated Blu-Ray owner...I absolutely adore the picture, but I'm having an issue with dialogue playing MUCH quieter than sound effects/music. Here's the skinny on my setup and what 've tried so far... I have the Yamaha RX-V457 receiver. I have two front speakers about 4-5 feet high, each about 3-4 feet to the side of the TV and about 12 feet from where the viewer sits. I have a middle channel just below the TV and a subwoofer, but it's not at the floor, it's about 3 feet off the ground. Two rear surround speakers sit directly to the viewer's right and left, maybe 3-4 feet from the ends of the sofa. The speakers are a Polk Audio set; the 2 mains and 2 rears are the same speaker. The speakers generally form a square. I use an optical cable for my audio. I checked the speaker connections and tested them, they're every connected properly. I've tried playing with the middle channel's and main speakers' levels every sorts of ways, but to no avail. The middle channel seems to receive a lot of music/effects coming through it, so simply increasing the middle level doesn't work (dialogue stays silent anyway). I've tried using different sound fields, such as the various "Movie" settings, the regular 5.1 stereo setting, Surround Enhanced, and a few others. I tried just using the Basic Setup mode to calibrate, and I've tried manually adjusting speaker level with the Manual Setup mode. I'm not an audiophile, so a lot of the settings and such on the receiver are Greek to me. I would appreciate any help, as I am now forced to sit through Blu-Ray movies with the remote in my hand so I can increase volume for talking scenes and lower it for action scenes. Normal TV is just fine, though...no level problems there. Thanks in advance!

Resolved Question: Car Power Amps question.?

I recently started looking into car audio to help a pal out with his system. So I have a pretty good question, I think. Would running a high end 700 watt amp X2 in "bridged" mode be the same quality as running a 1400 x1 high end amp to steer a sub. (power rating is arbitrary.)

Voting Question: Have you ever heard vocals singing/screaming to your music when no one was there to do it?

Ok this sounds insane, but, last night my band and I were rehearsing at our practice space and at the end of this really long jam, I start to hear this very distinct scream or howl that went right to our music (we play difficult core metal/ Death metal) that sent chills up my spine, so I look up at my guitarist Dustin to look if he was just getting into the music and doing it but his lips were closed. I look at my other guitarist, Kris, and his face is pale white and eyes wide open, that's when we both stopped in our tracks and ask each other "Did you hear that?!?". I thought it could have been me just hearing things but it was both of us which needless to say makes this very weird. Our stories coroborate each other exactly, without any suggestion. We both heard about 10 to 15 seconds of a shrill scream that somehow had a very high distorted octave mixed with a low growl. I don't scare easily and I had been playing drums every night but this put a chill over me that reached down to my scalp which in itself is very weird. I don't know if you can summon demons or spirits with audio or through analog instruments or if this was just a sonic illusion. I would adore if someone had some insight in to disembodied voices or some scientific background that could possibly explain every of this. THANKS!

Resolved Question: I can't record properly anymore on my PC!?

Yesterday I was recording on my PC. At first it functioned well, like always. But then, every of a sudden, it didn't work properly anymore. Instead of seeing a proper waveform (I use Audacity) I saw nothing but a monotone high-frequency note that sounded like a click at the beginning and the end of the audio track. At first I thought it was my microphone, but even after switching mics the problem remained. I also tried the standard audio recorder in Windows, but still the same problem. It might be the additional plug of my microphone (to make the end tiny enough to connect it to a PC), but I'm not sure. Could anyone please help me? Thanks in advance.

Resolved Question: Piecing together a home theater system?

I bought a new TV about a month ago, on black friday. Loving the TV. But I have no sound system. I'm looking into piecing together a decent system on Craigslist or Ebay (preferably Craigslist). I'd like to keep the cost of everything below $400. I don't need anything super high-end, just something that will sound decent. I'm probably going to piece it together piece-by-piece. Basically my needs for the sound system is watching football and blu-rays (I game a lot but I prefer surround sound headphones so that's not an issue.) Its for an average size bedroom. This is the TV I bought http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+BRAVIA+/+40%22+Class+/+1080p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9222496.p?id=1218062117241&skuId=9222496 I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, whats a good deal, the specs on receivers and speakers ect. Audio has never been my specialty. So any advise is really appreciated. What would you recommend I do? Thanks a lot!

Resolved Question: Can you connect high end PC speakers to a TV/Stereo unit?

Keep in mind, the higher end PC speakers use both green (pc audio) & black (pc subwoofer) connections for the computer. Is it safe to assume that just connecting the green 3.5mm plug to a TV will not work correctly on these speakers? since the PC speaker system wants a 3.5mm subwoofer plug to be used as well? Anyone with experience trying to use this setup? The PC speakers are higher end, 200w Altec Lansing...with 4 satellite speakers and a sub. Just wondering if I could use it with my TV/PS3 since I have no more use for the speakers with my PC. The PC speakers have both green 3.5mm and black 3.mm jacks. I understand I can easily convert RCA to 3.5mm (or use 3.5mm headphone)...but what do I do with the black (subwoofer) 3.5mm PC speaker jack?

Resolved Question: what is the best home theater speakers for buck?

I want to set up a home theater in my basement, I want to go high end with out paying to much. Instead of getting a projector I am getting a Lcd/Led tv. I have looked a countless brands of speakers and do not know which one will give out the best sound for my buck. There is a lot of good brands out there like, B&W, klipsch, Mcintosh, Paradim, Wilson Audio, Atlantic Tech and countless others but I want to find the ultimate speakers for my budget. I am willing to spend around $2,000-3,500 but really want to stay around the $2,000 mark. I want to have crisp, clear sound that is noisy and that gives you that movie theater experience. Also is there any diffrence in sound, good or bad between floor standing speakers and smaller speakers on stands? When choosing speakers should I go with 5.1 or 7.1 and what is better?

Resolved Question: Computer Memory Question?

Im nice of confused on this issue right now.. My computers been acting a little slow lately while running higher end Audio/Video programs and even though im an IT Tech (Not a noob, so feel free to go technical with me) I just cant figure out if I can update it or not. I may seem stupid for asking this, but here goes.. I went on the dell website to confirm the type of RAM I need to buy in order to perform another update (Ive updated it before, but its been so long i cant remember). The website said that I can only have up to 1024mb on my computer but the thing is I ALREADY have 1.5gb on it.. I was thinking of upgrading to 2gb knowing that Windows XP will support that, but after reading that im very confused as to if it'll really effect my actual computer performance. Computer Specs: Windows XP Home Edition SP3 Pentium 4 CPU 2.20GHz 2.19 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM Its a Dell Dimension 2350 with updated Graphics, Sound, and NIC running Duel Monitors with the ORIGINAL motherboard. Im not interested in buying a new PC considering its so easy to just upgrade this one and so far its been more than capable in my business needs. So please, no "Buy a new pc" comments, I just want the RAW facts of if the RAM is ok to still update. Thanks everyone for the answers. every will be appreciated.

Resolved Question: How can i hook up my PS3 to my PC (which has a TV tuner attached)?

I have an HP Touch smart 600 PC with Windows 7, and i'd like to hook it up to my PS3. The screen supports 1080p, so I would rather hook it up to the PC than a TV. The PC inputs are:a SPDIF input (looks like a red circle from a composite input), an audio out, a TV in (the output from an antenna), an S-video input, and an audio input. I have used the TV tuner capabilities of my computer before, and free-to-air streaming is done by Windows Media middle. I'd like to utilise the full capabilities of my screen, so anything that would provide high end graphics would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Is it possible to run my PS3 through a TV cable to receive better graphics than S-video?

Voting Question: Is it possible to have multiple discrete subwoofer channels?

Lets say you have an amazing high-end 7.1 audio system, with 4 subwoofers every placed on opposite sides of the room vertically and horizontally (every four walls). Pretty Much every audio equipment have one LFE output (for low frequencies (subwoofers). And every blu ray sound tracks support only one subwoofer channel, everything does. So would having the exact same sound coming out of every of my subs around me sound nice. I'm wondering if you could have a setup where each indivitual subwoofer would react accordingly to whats going on. Best example would be for playing video games, if the explosion is happening behind you in the game, you would want to hear it behind you, not every around you, so you can react to it effieciently in the game and have an overall more realistic exciting feel. Is a setup like this possible. Sorry for every the writting, lol, but is it a bad idea to have a front subwoofer in the front thats more powerful than the other 3, is a different brand name for the front speaker acceptable?, thank you alot for reading, please help.

Korea is known as the “Land of the Morning Calm.” This expression comes from the beginning of the modern history of Korea. Resolved Question: HTPC, do I need a new graphics card.?

Building a media PC out of salvage from an old machine about to be replaced. It has 2 radeon x1950 cards in it which have handled HD as my personal computer, and some reasonably high end games (but not without argument). Want to use this PC for watching HD tv through a tuner, recording and storing content from the tuner, HD file playback, streaming HD content from the web, general media applications like looking at pictures and playing some music (maybe). It may be okay to use what's there but they are getting dated, they're pretty noisy, there's two of them so they probably eat a lot of juice and also, occasionally anything I'm using them for at every be it games or video playback, will be subject to a temporary slowdown during which the audio makes some silly blippy noises, this fixes itself straight away and speed returns to normal but this would be pretty annoying for an HTPC. The cards also have no hdmi so I would need to use digital optical audio out as an audio solution. That said, if it ain't broke don't fix it, do you think the cards would be up to the job?
